Modified Starch E1401
Acid-treated starch (INS 1401), also called thin boiling starch, is prepared by treating starch or starch granules with inorganic acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid breaking down the starch molecule and thus reducing the viscosity.

Acid-modified starch functions as a warp sizing agent to increase yam strength and abrasion resistance in the weaving operation. Acid-modified starch is used in the manufacture of gypsum board for dry wall construction. Acid-modified waxy starches have found usefulness in corrugated board manufacture.
